Additional Information
Illinois State University offers major and minor programs in Interdisciplinary Studies that allow students to synthesize knowledge that spans two or more academic disciplines. Illinois State’s core values are at the heart of the Civic Engagement and Responsibility minor. This interdisciplinary minor prepares students to enact social change and develop an awareness of personal social responsibility, including active community engagement. Students in the minor collaborate with community partners to create a more just and equitable world. The minor gives students opportunities to sharpen their analysis of social issues, practice public problem-solving skills, reflect on civic engagement experiences with an appreciation for individual and community strengths, and enact a commitment to ethical civic action. The minor includes a special Urban Teacher Preparation concentration for teacher education majors (at any level/discipline) interested in preparing to teach in urban communities. This concentration includes courses that strongly focus on diversity, anti-racism, and community-engaged classrooms.
The Center for Civic Engagement supports our core value of civic engagement through programs, resources, and administrative support for campus initiatives like the American Democracy Project and the Civic Engagement and Responsibility minor.
Illinois State University recognizes that a diverse faculty, staff, and student body enriches the educational experiences of the entire campus and greater community.
